Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty can give your face a youthful and rejuvinated look and feel by improving the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids and around your eyes. It corrects drooping and sagging eyelids, removes excess skin from the upper eyelids and removes fatty bags beneath the eyes.

Your eyes are the focus of your face and what people notice first. The march of time is often marked with sagging, droopy, baggy eyelids as eyelid skin stretches, muscles weaken, and fat builds in pockets around the eyes. Eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift surgery, is usually an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia, with sedation if desired. During surgery, incisions are made in the natural folds of the eyelid so that they are virtually unnoticeable after the tissues have healed. After the excess tissue is removed, the incisions are closed with fine sutures. If only fatty tissue needs to be removed from the lower eyelids and not any skin, the surgery can be performed behind the eyelid. This is known as "transconjunctival blepharoplasty" and leaves no visible scar.

For drooping eyelids, an eyebrow lift, also known as a forehead lift, may be called for. This can be done directly above the eyebrows, within the forehead creases, or by approaching the brows from the hairline or just behind the hairline as a coronal brow lift or endoscopic brow lift.
